An endangered species is a species which has been categorized as very likely to become Extinct. Version 2014.2 of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species identified 4574 Critically Endangered species, subspecies and varieties, stocks and subpopulations. This list is updated every year, and the trend is typically more species move onto the list than off. We are certainly not going in the right direction. Habitat destruction, the lack of proper land conservation, disease, poaching, water scarcity, pollution on land and in waterways, human urban growth ---- the factors are all adding up to a destabilizing effect upon our Animal Kingdom. And Mother Earth, a unique Home for thousands and thousands of animal (and plant) species in the Universal Cosmos; is increasingly losing its precious cargo. Some of the loss is due to Natural Causes; but too much of the cause for dying species is the result of Humankind. Let’s endeavor as part of our contribution to the world, to engage on this issue, through personal and consistent involvement. Personal action, charitable action, legislation, national and international leadership, education, and a sustaining commitment to reverse the trends. We need to pay attention to our role as “galactic safe-guardians” to the Earth’s, and t he Universe’s Precious Life Species.
Things You Can Do
-
Lean More. Get educated on the subject of endangered species. Which animals are threatened with extinction, and where they can be found in the world.
-
Act. Not all of us can be out in the wild, fighting against extinction, or the destruction of wildlife habitats; however, we can act through others, especially the many fine, dedicated organizations, both national and international, who have the science and people to support this issue. The biggest things we can do is support these organizations through charitable donations; support national legislation that protects wildlife, especially species that are endangered; and last, discuss and promote the protection of endangered species with your friends.
